We say this without controversy - The original Smash Bait is one of the top performing lures in Sportfishing by practically any measure, whether that is tournament winnings, number of big fish caught, however you want to look at it. There is no secret why this is consistently one of the most in-demand lures out there.

Onto a bit of the shape design. While Tube shapes are traditionally best in calm waters due to their flat face, the slight taper that exists on the Smash Bait actually allows the lure to hold in way better than other tube shaped lures that blow out in rougher seas. They have been extremely productive in some of the roughest waters you can find, such as the Australian reef where they are targeting big Blacks - It's pretty great in the chop.

Here is lure maker Erik Rusnak on the origins of the Smash Bait from our YouTube interview: "I definitely have my personal favorites of things I make, of things that I feel personally naked fishing without. Just a brief story on the Smash Bait, because that has become really popular. When I grew up making lures I had a little wood lathe, and everything was cut on the wood lathe. The Smash Bait was actually a big blank that I made to cut down to size. I made the biggest thing I could make in a long orange juice canister. I made this master, made the angle before I had explored all the angle options - It was just a blank.

"At the time I was fishing with Ray Corder on the Pacific Blue out of Honolulu - I was 17, and he asked me to make him one of the 'big ones'... I poured him one of these big blanks, but it was bigger than I was used to pouring... And this one cracked, and I gave it to him. He spent about 3 weeks after charters hand sanding this thing, polishing it down. That lure was phenomenal, and that was the origins of the modern Smash Bait."
