Jason Kunewa
Location: Kona, Hawaii, United States
Charter/Boat: 'Ku'uipo' Sportfishing - 38' Custom Phoenix Sportfisher
"Started my fishing career 12 years ago for Dana Wharf Sportfishing with guys like Captain Todd Mansur and Captain Chris Pica where I learned the ins and outs of working on a California sport boat with 60 passengers. We focused on inshore fish, bottom fishing in the fall and winter, and chasing mahi mahi, yellowtail, small yellowfin, and decent bluefin in the summer for 5 years.
"Then I moved to Kona, HI with the goal in mind to learn as much as possible from guys like Captain Bomboy Llanes and Captain Mike DeRego and last but not least Captain Kevin Hiney. My Hawaiian blood runs deep in Kona. My dad is full-blood Hawaiian, and I’m a fourth generation fisherman. My grandfather Captain John Kunewa was part of the legendary Kona "Magnificent Seven" with Henry Chee, George, Phil Parker, Bill Conklin, Tacs Waldron, and Charlie Machado, so I've always been so fascinated with the fishery here and all the stories of giant Blue Marlin and wanted to be a part of it.
"My cousin Captain Momi Bean was a big inspiration for me to move to Kona. I’ve been fishing Kona for the last 7 years. I’ve learned so much from so many top notch guys here and currently working on the Ku’uipo for going on 6 years now."
