Charter/Boat: 'The Release Man' - 48' G&S
Captain Marty Bates brings with him an immense reputation if not already establishing himself as a legend in the field of sportfishing. The majority of his experience and notoriety involves catching very large marlin, Blue and Black.
A couple of his noteworthy catches include a 1042 on an Andy Moyes Argus and a 1254 which ate 2 Black Bart lures. There are many others to add to that list as well.
Just a few of Marty’s many achievements are his work in helping pioneer the Ghana Fishery in 1999 and Ascension Island in 2002. He Has won the Billfish Foundation award for most releases 2 times and has won most tags per captain as well. He has been a part of capturing at least 8 IGFA records - A few very noteworthy ones are 16 lb women's Atlantic Blue Marlin record, the White Marlin 2 lb and 8 lb, also the 6 lb Atlantic Blue Marlin record. He is also one of the few to say he has caught 6 triples in Cape Verde, and they were not all rats either. Marty has won the Cape Verde Penn Challenge twice, and this is only a small sample of the many big fish and tournament wins that could fill the pages.
One very noteworthy win we have to mention is the 2020 Blue Marlin World Cup, which he won with a 964lb blue marlin - a large fish for this event. You can read about this remarkable win in an article published by In The Bite Magazine here.
Marty is a humble captain who has fished all over the world, and his success and name goes a long way in the Sportfishing world, garnering the utmost respect on any dock. He also has racked up some great achievements in the swordfishing world off New Zealand. He spends his time now fishing the Cape Verde Islands and freelancing on top Sportfishing boats around the globe during his off season. He is currently building guest houses in Cape Verde for his clients to stay at and fish, and I'm sure there will be many more achievements and large fish we will hear about from Marty.
Starting in the 2024 Season, Marty will be fishing on 'The Release Man' (48' G&S) out of Cape Verde.
